Proper maintenance and service of roller shutter doors is essential, not only to ensure that you get the most out of your investment by increasing its lifespan, but also as a safety precaution.
At Shutter Repair London we pride ourselves in only installing roller shutters of the best quality, but even with that in mind, as with any other type of machinery, roller shutters do require care so that they don’t break down and potentially harm someone.
Roller Shutter Regulations
In order to make sure that your roller shutters are in optimal condition, it’s important to follow the rules and regulations surrounding maintenance of domestic and commercial roller shutters.
There are two main regulations put in place in the UK that include roller shutters: Regulation 5 of the Workplace (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and Regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Under both regulations, any powered door or piece of machinery are to be maintained at an efficient state and regularly checked so as to ensure that the equipment doesn’t deteriorate and put people at risk. A servicing schedule is the best way to make this happen.
The servicing schedule will depend on what type of shutter you have, and how frequently it is used. For example a shutter used for a public car park which encounters continuous use as cars enter or leave may need servicing twice a year. By comparison, a roller shutter that’s used very infrequently – for example for light domestic use – may only need servicing only every four or five years.
No matter how much you put your roller shutters to use, a maintenance schedule is vital to the prolonged operation of the roller shutter, as well as the safety of anyone on the premises. Any maintenance or repairs should only be carried out by a qualified engineer, and the door should not be used again until it has been verified to be brought back to safe working order.
At Shutter Repair London we’ll be more than happy to discuss the subject of service and maintenance with you before, during and after installation to make sure that your roller shutters operate safely and under regulations.
